SYNOPSIS
The Philippines is one of the most climate-vulnerable countries in the world, facing significant risks from natural disasters. According to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), the economic cost of inaction on climate change could rise to PHP 1.4 trillion (approximately EUR 22.3 billion) by 2030. The establishment of the Climate Change Commission and the formulation of the National Climate Change Action Plan (2011–2028) underscores food security, water sufficiency, human safety, sustainable energy, and the development of green industries. It also highlights climate resilience, environmental sustainability, and adaptive strategies to mitigate the adverse effects of climate change on communities and ecosystems. As part of its commitment to ambitious climate mitigation strategies, the Philippines aims to reinforce national policies and programs that advance sustainability, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and bolster the country's capacity to respond to climate-related challenges effectively. To meet these climate objectives, the country has pledged to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 75% by 2030 and increase the share of renewable energy in its total energy mix to 35% by 2030, with a long-term target of 50% by 2040.
Germany's strong commitment to climate action, together with its advanced expertise in renewable energy and green technologies, positions it as a global leader in climate diplomacy. By fostering collaborative initiatives with climate-vulnerable nations like the Philippines, Germany creates vital opportunities for knowledge exchange, technical cooperation, and capacity-building. Leveraging its extensive experience and technological capabilities, it plays a crucial role in advancing the Philippines' climate goals, particularly in accelerating renewable energy development, improving energy efficiency, and enhancing climate resilience.
The forum aims to showcase the valuable contributions of German enterprises in supporting the Philippines' climate goals, particularly in advancing the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). Key areas of collaboration include renewable energy, energy efficiency, and sustainable waste management. Through innovative technologies and solutions, German organizations have supported the country's transition toward a more sustainable and climate-resilient economy. Hosting the event in Cebu highlights the importance of driving local climate action in major economic centers to ensure long-term energy security and sustainable development.
